Bass Espresso

There are too many variables to create a decent coffee!

Bass Espresso ticks all the boxes, I was impressed with the choice of beans… not being a generic brand, the atmosphere was adoring, the staff were cheerful & the skilled barista produced an exceptional coffee!

The rich aroma enticed me, I hoped for the best, albeit usually let down by the flavour of the coffee. However at Bass Espresso I was delighted by a full bodied brew, with the perfect balance of acidity creating an overall commendable flavour.

The staff’s warmth & extroverted nature juxtaposed to the on trend interior which is a perfect balance of eccentric and shabby chic to align to the West End location.

Bass Espresso provides an inviting setting to chill out with a divine cup of coffee. Conveniently located on Boundary Road, West End (the end with easy parking) it’s a breeze to pop into on your way to work or the like!

Always a positive to support the little guy so call in today and experience all Bass Espresso has to offer (inc. grab & go options & tasty sweets).

Bass Espresso also offers a loyalty system to sweeten the deal!

Breakfast @ Delizioso on Oxford

I felt quite concerned posting something overwhelming negative.
I tried to highlight some positives to try and balance my review.
But then I saw Carmen’s review from 04 Mar & felt justified in posting:

This is not the first time I have had breakfast at Deliziosa on Oxford, but it will be the last.
The previous occasion was fine, nothing standout but this most current just last weekend is something I cannot get past.

We usually don’t dine out for breakfast but I had a hankering for waffles with my hung-over head guiding my appetite, we went to our new local, The rabbit hole café but was too busy and the few tables left were wet, so off we drove to Oxford Street in hope of something not overtly busy as by this stage it was around 09:30 and no one likeswaiting for their meals!

Deliziosa on Oxford was only about a third full, and most had their meals, so thought that was a good start! We ordered coffees; I personally am not a fan of the beans used. My partner had the iced coffee, as he doesn’t drink coffee (other than iced) he was quite alarmed that they had just layered the crème onto the espresso, it presented well. But did not sit well with him.

Our order:

Pancakes                  $16 Served with Maple Syrup and Ice Cream and Apple and Cinnamonimage

Delizioso Big Breakfast                  $21 Eggs (Eggs can be cooked Poached, Fried or Scrambled) Baked Beans, Lamb Sausages, Hash Browns, Grilled Roma Tomato, Bacon, Mushroom’s and Toast

Presentation as you can see above was good, although my partners plate was also dusted with powdered sugar.
However, my pancakes were so tough, akin to eating rubber. The apple and cinnamon was lovely though. However I wouldn’t pay $16 for stewed apple coated in cinnamon.
I didn’t think it was possible to ruin a breakfast dish, but then my partner leans after seeing my face as I am struggling through my pancakes and says his big breakfast is over cooked too.

The waitress comes over a quarter way into our meals, as seems to be the norm, when our mouths are full so all we can manage is a nod. And she quickly shuffles away.

Other than the food, the service seems attentive, other than the concern for feedback. There was more than sufficient wait staff to the ratio of patrons, so ordering and fixing the bill was done with ease.

My new hobby! I have always considered myself talentless and not an inch artistic but since volunteering at the local Children’s Hospital I have sourced innovative, simple craft ideas, which are easy and quick to make! This, coupled with the rising cost of greeting cards inspired me to DIY. This has been a HIT with family and friends, honestly appreciating the handmade touch! Also allows the BF guilt free Xbox gaming, so win win!

Hidden suburban Italian treasure!

Stella Star Café, Coorparoo.

Often you are one of few diners within this well-established restaurant.
But no matter the number of patrons, owner Louie treats you as though you are the only one in the room, with a true passion for food and service; I continue to come back to Stellar Star Café!
The quality of food is second to none, myself with an Italian heritage I am, generally, neither impressed nor tempted by Italian restaurants, with a fear of paying for something I know will never stack up to Nonna’s cooking!

The heritage of the restaurant allured me, the quality and quantity of food coupled with the homely, welcoming atmosphere has hooked me.
I intend to introduce my entire friend circle to this slice of Mediterranean heaven.
But Louie is humble, he insists he is ‘not in the business to make money, he just loves what he does’, but I am sorry Louie as I insisted to you the secret has to come out, the food is too good for the community not to know that right under our noses tucked away in the suburbs is such a stellar find!

Pack your appetite! The entrées are enough to sustain as a main.
The menu changes every Thursday, you are greeted with flavoursome gourmet dishes you would expect to find in an upmarket 5 star inner city restaurant forking out $50 for an entrée sized main. The reasonable pricing at Stella Star, given the genuine Italian serving sizes will amaze you!

If you are in for lunch, dabble in the Tapas menu! (Served from 12-4pm).

Louie is more than accommodating and willing to adapt the menu and serving sizes to your group, offering to make anything with suggestions from staple ingredients from the group. We were more than satisfied with the likes of Potato and Cheese Croquettes, Tomato
Bruschetta & an array of Cheese centric options.

DO NOT leave without trying the Tiramisu! Whilst in my opinion not a traditional Tiramisu experience, it has a very mild coffee undertone, which can be appreciated, by coffee lovers and haters alike!

Trio of Dips.
Tapas including: Proscuitto wrapped Brie & Fish Cakes.

Monstrous Tapas including: Potato & Cheese Croquettes, Marinated Olives, Tomato Bruschetta, Deep-fried Brie w/ fig conserve & Bocconcini.

Ravioli in a sauce of 4 cheeses!

Tiramisu!

I can not fathom why it’s so low?

Byblos, Portside Wharf, Hamilton.

This experience is one for those of us who LOVE food and have a terrible desire to eat until they can eat no more… Sure you could order a main off the menu, but each time I have been I have opted for the Mezza Banquet, the second time the waiter did warn me of the punishment I was about to endure on my stomach lining. But I laughed it off, highlighting the fact this wasn’t my first encounter!
While I am sure this FEAST (apparently for 2 people) could easily satisfy four I would rather over eat and suffer the consequences then to leave unsatisfied, hehe.
The first encounter was much more satisfying in regards to the seafood ordered: Tuna sashimi, Octopus and Escargot.
I would stick with the pasties, grilled plates, dips and HALOUMI SALAD!
And the only dish I wouldn’t eat was the chicken wings, though I am still very finicky about eating meat from the bone!

My recommendations:

Haloumi Salad- Pan-fried Cyprian haloumi served with fresh mint, mixed greens, tomato and avocado. V, GF.

Baba Ghanouj- This dip combines smoky, char-grilled eggplant with  roasted garlic, tahini, and fresh lemon juice. V, GF available.

Trio of Dips- This is the best way to taste and share a selection of our  authentic Lebanese dips. The Byblos Trio of Dips comes with hommos, baba ghanouj and labneh. V, GF available.

Kebbi- Kebbi is Lebanon’s national dish. Hand-rolled ovals  of ground lamb and ground beef with pine nuts, chili,  and traditional spices. There are four pieces per serving.

Sambusek- Homemade pastries filled with marinated lamb, pine nuts, and traditional spices. Sambusek is lightly fried and there are four pieces per serving.

Pumpkin Kebbi 16.5- Hand rolled ovals of pumpkin, spinach and feta cheese seasoned with onion and spices. There are four pieces per serving. V.

Baby Octopus 17.9- Tender boiled baby octopus pan fried and sautéed with basil, garlic, chili and tomato.

Lahim Meshwi - Pieces of tender lamb marinated in olive oil and traditional Lebanese herbs and spices.

Shish Tawook - Chicken tenderloin marinated in olive oil garlic, coriander and lemon juice.

Atleast once, you must try…

Finish with:

Tea or coffee and Turkish delight

Of their cocktail menu I have sampled: Lavender and Rose Clouds,  Perfect Pear and The Lychee and Basil Martini.

Lavender and Rose Clouds

A complex, floral cocktail that showcases some flavours we also use in our desserts. House-made lavender syrup, rose water and Hendricks Gin is heated and served in a tea cup with Persian Rose fairy floss on the side. You can either place the fairy floss in the tea cup and watch the clouds disappear or just enjoy it as a tasty treat on the side- the choice is yours.

This was INTERESTING, it was presented in a delicate floral tea set alike to that of my grandmothers, not having consumed a hot cocktail previously, I was hesitant but as it reached room temperature and the addition of the fairy floss it became quite lovely.

Perfect Pear

This delicious after dinner style cocktail combines Glenfiddich 15 year old Scotch whiskey with cinnamon sugar syrup, Bertrand pear liqueur, and barrel aged bitters. It is served over ice with a cinnamon poached pear as garnish.

Not that I generally drink dark spirits, even my companion was not sold on this, the scotch seemed to take over the palate, presented well however mine was not garnished with a pear.

The Lychee and Basil Martini

Zen Green Tea liqueur and Malibu mixed with Massenez lychee liqueur and a splash of Opal Nera white sambucca. Shaken hard with fresh lime, basil, and apple juice. Served straight up.

This was delightful, now I love lychee cocktails personally so have a high standard when it comes to such drinks, this exceeded my expectations.
It was pure delight!

I have just locked in my third Byblos dining experience as a treat after I finish my two assessments but this time I am thinking it may be time to order JUST a few tapas… and their fabulous cocktails.
I have just ventured to their sister restaurant Fifth Element in Southbank but the fact I am choosing to return to Byblos I believe speaks volumes, being twice the distance from my house, however Byblos having complimentary basement parking is more convenient than hunting for a park in bustling Southbank!
